An Integrated Approach to Pain

LightStim Elipsa and LightStim ProPanel

While medical solutions are often necessary for and can provide meaningful relief of pain, an integrated approach that melds medical and non-medical treatment is often recommended for best results. Spa treatments that help promote these supportive benefits include but are not limited to massage, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, and light therapy (also known as red light therapy, LED therapy, and photobiomodulation.)

Light Therapy Boosts the Body’s Inherent Resources for Repair & Relief

Studies have shown that light therapy signals responses in the body that help relieve pain. There are two general pathways through which this occurs:

Addressing the Source

Eliminate the source of the pain and it will almost always go away. Light therapy has been shown to increase the production and activity of various growth factors as well as fibroblast and epithelial cells to assist in the healing of both acute and chronic wounds. It has also been shown to increase nitric oxide, an important vasodilator. More nitric oxide translates to improved microcirculation which helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to damaged tissues for healing and repair. For these reasons, and because it’s so effective at controlling inflammation, light therapy is widely used to help relieve pain associated with various circumstances including arthritis, tendinitis, neuropathies, sprains and strains.

Addressing the Sensation

Besides eliminating the source of the pain, light therapy has also been shown to reduce the sensation by releasing painkillers naturally produced by the body known as endorphins. Endorphins are neurotransmitters (messengers in the body) that play a role in pain signaling and sensation. In studies, light therapy has been shown to release local neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine and opioid-containing immune cells that migrate to inflamed sites and release endorphins to inhibit pain.
